Good day parents and guardians, I hope you are all having a wonderful week and I would like to share with you one of the exciting things that we are doing at East Elementary this year.  This year at East, our staff is moving towards implementing the Daily 5 program in their classrooms. At our last School Council meeting, Ms. Kruse and Ms. Smith provided the guests with a presentation on the program and I will share the main parts with you.  Basically, the Daily 5 program “…is a framework for structuring literacy time so students develop lifelong habits of reading, writing, and working independently.”  What is taught in the classroom has not changed, what has changed is the way the students approach the material.  Through this program, students are able to work on the various components of the program at their own pace, at their own level, and with the goal of improving literacy and independence skills.  There are 5 components to the program:

    • Read to Self,
    • Work on Writing,
    • Read to Someone,
    • Listen to Reading, and
    • Word Work.

If you would like more information regarding this program I encourage you to speak to your child and ask them what he/she is doing in class and contact your teacher if you would like more information.  In addition, feel free to check out the Daily 5 website to find more information.

Thanks and have a great November!
